Voluntary Active Euthanasia in Canada: Implications for US Bioethicists and Mental Health Professionals
Discussants:
We will discuss the implications of Canada's recent extension of medical assistance in dying (MAID), which in 2023 will allow persons with psychiatric conditions as their sole underlying medical condition to be eligible for this end-of-life option. Our panel represents perspectives on MAID from Canada and Belgium to give insights on elements of practice. The panel itself is meant to be informative, rather than argue for one side of the debate over others. We will reserve approximately 25 minutes for Q&A, during which time we hope to discuss both MAID on the basis of psychiatric conditions generally and what this could mean for professional practice and bioethics in the US.
